The Power of the Mind – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Anne Hatt
Is your mind always racing? Do you have difficulty sleeping because all these thoughts and worries come to mind when you lie down and try to rest?
Perhaps that energy could be put to better use by trying out some mind activities which put you in control of those thoughts that seem to come from nowhere and keep you awake. Switching your awareness to your senses of smell, hearing and touch is an easy way of becoming more mindful and present.
Mindfulness meditation may be just what you are looking for. Mindfulness seems to be a new buzzword, but what is it all about? Mindfulness is about becoming more aware of your thoughts, thus becoming calmer and more in control and it can be practised by anyone. Mindfulness can take many forms, all you need to do is to set aside some time when you won’t be disturbed, maybe 10 minutes a day, it can also take the form of something more active including drawing and coloring in, cooking, exercising or listening to music. Even washing the dishes can be mindful if you try to be aware of what you are doing in the present moment, and if your mind wanders, just calmly bring it back to the activity you have selected.
Research into mindfulness meditation on a group of cancer patients showed, the treatment group had fewer overall symptoms of stress; fewer cardiopulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms; less emotional irritability, depression, and cognitive disorganization; and fewer habitual patterns of stress.
