What Services Does Interchange Australia Provide for Older People? – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
Are you aged 65 years or over and require support services? Under the umbrella of My Aged Care, Interchange Australia is able to offer services under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) in the Wingecarribee Shire and the Home Care Packages Program (HCP). Both require an intake process and subsequent assessment through My Aged Care to determine eligibility.
The government-funded programs that Interchange Australia covers are Domestic Assistance, Personal Care, Social Support and Flexible Respite. While these services are designed to meet most people’s needs, they are provided under service specifications and objectives. An example is Domestic Assistance which many associate with a private cleaning service. The My Aged Care objective for Domestic Assistance is “to provide frail, older people with assistance with domestic chores to maintain their capacity to manage everyday activities in a safe, secure and health home environment”. This in turn is also guided by Work Health Safety requirements and the government encourages the support to assist and improve the person’s capacity for self-management.
Government funded services have a ceiling which is fast being reached. With that in mind, subsidised services are in place to assist seniors to remain living in their own home, but when people’s needs that are not covered under the various service specifications, it is suggested they be purchased privately. This is relevant for both CHSP and HCP services and all seniors, and their families and carers, need to be aware of this.
