Since its beginning in 2009, RockCan has drawn bands from the Southern Highlands together for the enjoyment of the local community. RockCan is a platform for young people with and without disabilities to showcase their musical talents.
Many of our clients share a passion for music and the Interchange Australia music program offers people the opportunity to join a band, learn to sing and to play guitar. Participants rehearse weekly under the guidance of skilled and experienced Interchange Australia staff who have years of experience teaching music and playing in local bands. Participants in the music program showcase the skills they have developed throughout the year at RockCan.
The Hidden Wonders, a band consisting of Interchange Australia clients and support staff have headlined RockCan since its inception. The bands performance improves each year and this is attributable to the new skills that each participant learns as a result of the music program. Over the past two years, The Hidden Wonders have been invited to perform at concerts in Campbelltown, Nowra and Mittagong and featured in a story recorded and aired by ABC Illawarra which is testament to the positive outcomes that the music program delivers and the increasing popularity of RockCan.
We are excited to have our new bands, Strawberry Jam and Under the Radar performing this year for the very first time.
The essence of RockCan is the participation, the interaction and the experience that comes with being part of organising and performing in a large music event. RockCan is a much anticipated event on the local music calendar and attendance has grown each year.
Interchange Australia’s RockCan is more than just a concert, it’s a learning experience. Over the years we have had clients involved in an array of activities from assisting the bands to set up their equipment, creating and recording songs and videos to assisting in the promotion of the event. Several clients have joined local bands and others have performed at local busking events. One client has gone on to become part of the stage crew at a local club following his involvement with RockCan. Our aim is that with the support of RockCan, clients with an interest in music, production and performing, may pursue their passion and potentially establish a career in this field.
