Post School Options for Young People with Disability – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Genevieve Vel
For young people with disability, leaving the school system and transitioning to post school options can be daunting.
Post School Options include Social, Community and Civic participation, SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports), Other NDIS Employment supports eg. Supported Employment, Disability Employment Services and ongoing education options at TAFE and Universities.
To ensure a smooth transition parents and carers should work closely with the schools and other stakeholders to ensure they make informed decisions and select post school options based on the student’s support needs, goals and ambitions.
Things to consider when deciding on post school options:
- The student’s current strengths and interests and short and long term goals (eg interests in further formal education, employment or life skills and recreation)
- Existing support needs (types and level of support the student requires)
- Parent’s/carer’s expectations
