The Positive Benefits of Music – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
At Interchange Australia, our music program consisting of band, singing and guitar classes have proven to be extremely popular. 2017 has been an exciting year for the Interchange Australia band, The Hidden Wonders, who performed an extended set at RockCan 2017 and received many invitations to perform at many local community events throughout the year. Their dedication to weekly rehearsals under the guidance of trained and experienced musicians, has led to a marked improvement in the bands performance and has led to the band receiving multiple invitations to play at local community events. Our singers continue to improve as do our budding musicians.
Music and singing are known to improve our health and wellbeing. Scientists believe that endorphins and oxytocin, our so-called ‘feel good’ hormones are responsible. L Moon, in a recent article about the wellness benefits of singing commented that research suggests singing boosts the immune system, improves breathing, posture, speech, respiratory issues and lessens effects of dementia. Moon also noted the transformational power of singing, especially when in groups, as not only does the shared singing experience break down social isolation, it also removes the person from their current situation, often relieving pain and stress.
Interchange Australia’s mix of music classes caters for people from beginners through to experts. No matter your level of experience, anyone can participate.
