Older Australians: More Active, Productive and Living Healthier Lives – Written by Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
Let‘s have a look at some statistics! In 2015, one in seven people, 15.1% were over 65 years old. While the 15.1% is an increase on previous years, the prevalence of disability among them has decreased. Older Australians are now more active, more productive and living healthier lifestyles. Increasing numbers now participate in exercise and recreation, activities and hobbies and various caring roles. In the Wingecarribee Shire we have around one third of our population over 55 years old whereas the rest of NSW has around one quarter over 55 years old. With an active and inclusive older generation continuing to contribute to our community, programs to assist them to remain independent and involved are very important.
The Council of the Ageing (COTA) Australia has advised the government wants preventative health measures in place on all levels to ensure health and happiness, in turn, reducing the economic impact on our ageing population.
Interchange Australia, under the My Aged Care system, is able to offer various products to enable people to remain safe and independent at home, and continue their community participation. Interchange Australia provides Domestic Assistance, Social Support, Personal Care and Flexible Respite. We have been providing these services in the Wingecarribee for over 30 years and have the experience and knowledge to help you navigate the My Aged Care system and access our support.
