Ladies’ Social Group Offers Support, Friendship and Good Times – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
The Interchange Australia Ladies’ Group has been meeting for many years and was developed to fill a need for clients to have a regular weekly get-together. They were not interested in big groups, just a few of them to enjoy an outing in the community. Outings may be quite varied from galleries, lavender farm visits and antique markets, to just a stroll around the local shops for some retail therapy. Café visits are a must, enjoyment is a necessity and laughter is always the outcome. Over the years, friendships have developed and the ladies often comment it is the highlight of their week.
Socialisation is such an important part of everyone’s health and as we age, it is often overlooked for the physical issues that tend to occur. Sadly, as many people age they begin to lose their social contacts through reasons such as not being able to drive, becoming housebound through either their or their family member’s ill health, and friends passing away. All these circumstances reduce normal social contacts, resulting in a constant decline in social function. The need to maintain social interaction has been widely researched, and those engaged in social contact had a much slower rate of cognitive decline, had fewer illnesses and were less prone to depression.
