Four months ago, I started working with Interchange Australia after 19 years in Aged Care. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my time caring for the elderly, but this has been a wonderful change and a really rewarding decision.
Working with Interchange has also given me the opportunity to care, but in many different ways. The services that we provide for our clients is so much more than I realised before starting my employment here. And I get to meet many wonderful people on a daily basis.
One day I could be assisting someone with their domestic chores, the next day taking someone off to an appointment. One morning I’m in a Zumba class with a bunch of client enthusiasts, or I could be having a sleepover and “having the time of my life”. Dirty Dancing always seems to be a movie favourite – no complaints from me!
Seeing the excitement on clients’ faces when we are loading up the bus on a Saturday morning to take them out for a real adventure – is priceless. Whether it be a train into the city, or a visit to the local animal farm (with a barbecue to boot) – it doesn’t matter what outing it is, we all have a great time.
I was asked recently “what is it like working for Interchange?” The best way for me to answer that, is to say that it’s like every day is your birthday, and you open up a present to see what’s inside. A new client to meet.
Everyone has a story to tell and needs the company of others every now and then. If I can help make someone’s day, then hopefully I’m doing my job well.
I hope to stay working here with a great bunch of friendly staff, for a long time to come.
