Let me begin this article with a declaration that I have absolutely no musical skills whatsoever. I can’t sing and I can’t play an instrument! Despite this, like many people, I do have a passion for music and I enjoy listening to a wide variety of genres whenever I get the opportunity, either in the car or at home.
As part of my role with Interchange Australia, I have been very fortunate to have spent a lot of time working with our consultants and coordinators on the music program and the annual RockCan concert. I have attended many band class rehearsals and have built up a rapport with all of the guys who are part of the Interchange Australia band, ‘The Hidden Wonders.’ As the music program has evolved, I have been delighted by the progress that all of the participants have made. When attending rehearsals, you can distinctly notice an improvement from the week before. All of the music program classes are a learning environment and participants follow the lead of our coordinator, support staff and volunteer musicians and in between classes, they practice the songs at home. This commitment is a reflection of the passion our clients have for music.
Each time I enter Welby Hall for a band class rehearsal, I immediately feel a sense of friendship, fun and excitement from everyone involved. It’s an experience that you really need to see firsthand to fully appreciate. As such, every band class rehearsal is open for families and/or carers of existing band members and prospective participants and their families or carers to see how the class is structured and to ask our staff any questions. New participants in band class, guitar class and singing class are welcome to join at any stage of the year.
At Interchange Australia, we are always exploring new elements to incorporate into our various programs, activities and initiatives for the benefit of our clients. One recent addition to the music program has been the introduction of The RockCan Hour radio show on 92.5FM Youth Radio.
Every Monday night between 5pm and 6pm I present The RockCan Hour and am joined in the studio by members of The Hidden Wonders. The show is essentially a music and interview format and is an opportunity for music program participants to talk about their experiences in the music program, performing at RockCan, their favourite types of music and bands and to introduce songs that they have selected to play. Word has spread about the show with participants telling their friends and family to tune in and listen and the feedback has been very positive. Every participant that has featured on the RockCan Hour has asked when they will be coming back to the studio again!
The concept behind launching this show was to match our participants passion for music with an opportunity for them to build their communication skills by sharing their experiences with a live audience. As a result of our partnership with 92.5FM Youth Radio, the opportunity exists in the future for music program participants to create their own programs, to conduct their own interviews and to perform live in the studio. Every Interchange Australia program, activity and initiative is designed to deliver positive outcomes for our clients and the music program is a perfect demonstration of this.
Thank you to the board of 92.5FM Youth Radio for supporting the development of the RockCan Hour and for the stations ongoing support of the annual RockCan concert.
