Getting Active – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Amber Hall
Spring and Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. At Interchange Australia, we offer a wide range of exciting and engaging activities throughout the year, however, during the warmer months, we are able to offer more opportunities to get outside! Interchange Australia’s campuses are located in close proximity to several NSW National Parks and gardens, including Minnamurra Rainforest, Fitzroy Falls and The Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan. These locations are perfect for enjoying outdoor activities.
The benefits of social and recreational activities have been well researched and are proven to improve a person’s well-being, both physically and mentally. Some of these benefits include improving health, fitness, controlling weight, improving mood and promoting relaxation.
Both our clients and staff enjoy participating in a wide range of activities at all of our campuses (Narellan, Springett and Travis). Clients participate in weekly sporting and recreational activities that are very diverse, including tenpin bowling, surfing, overall fitness and visits to local parks.
At the recent September/October ASDESI Holiday Kids Klub, the kids and staff enjoyed a hike through the tranquil Minnamurra Rainforest and a walk at the beach at North Wollongong.
Our golf group have recommenced their Thursday night lessons at Highlands Golf Club in Mittagong. The lessons are a wonderful opportunity to learn essential golf skills and have a friendly game with friends.
Depending upon your eligibility to receive services, we can offer support to participate in activities either individually or in a group. A large number of our clients attend a gym or go to various sporting activities, including OzTag and horse therapy, accompanied by our support workers. We cater for exercise that is tailored to our clients’ physical levels and support needs. Some of the fantastic group activities coming up in November include BBQ dinner groups, a trip to Sydney to walk around the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition and a walk along the spectacular coastline at Kiama.
