Interchange Australia: Delivering a Wide Range of Services to People Aged Over 65 – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
Many of us who have older parents, relatives or friends, share concerns for their ongoing wellbeing. While there are numerous government services available, many services in the Wingecarribee Shire area are at capacity and have lengthy waiting lists. Service providers, including Interchange Australia, will help older, frail people to live as independently as possible by focussing on their needs, and building their strengths. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme provides small amounts of low level home support services either on a short term or ongoing basis. Interchange Australia offers these services under subsidised programs through MyAgedCare, and can also arrange additional services when government subsidised services are not immediately available. When hospital admittance is experienced, the service provider should be contacted so services may be suspended, and where capacity is available, they may be able to increase services for a short period of time after the person is discharged.
In the Wingecarribbee Local Government Area, there is a high percentage of over 65s, meaning capacity is limited. An older parent may require support immediately and you may not be available to provide the support, or access it from a service provider. Interchange Australia has an active waiting list, however, when at capacity, we also offer additional services to assist the individual and their family, including:
- assistance with showering and grooming;
- medication monitoring;
- transport to appointments;
- accompanying people to social activities, respite, meal preparation, overnight support; and
- hospital to home support
While your parent, relative or friend is on a waiting list, their need is not going to lessen and a good option is to access additional support services as an interim measure. Often a family will choose this option for some peace of mind, until the subsidised support becomes available. These additional services offer a good solution to providing the support you may not be able to arrange in the short term.
