Our Dedicated Support Staff – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
At Interchange Australia, our support staff go that extra mile.
As an Interchange Australia consultant, I often have support staff talk to me excitedly about an idea for an activity or something they have researched or read about concerning their support of a client. “What about we do a bushwalk around Lake Alexandra?…there’s a great exhibition on at the Berrima Museum…they’d love to visit their friend in Wollongong.”
One support worker, who provides a regular domestic assistance service for a client, encourages the client to get involved in the service. The staff member completes the more intensive tasks and the client does the dusting and general tidying. The cleaning is done to a backdrop of classical music, the client’s favourite! When finished, they both share a cuppa and a quick chat, a perfect example of staff working with a client and both enjoying the experience. Some of our older clients are socially isolated so our staff ensure that clients engage with the service where possible and include an element of socialisation in each service.
Another support worker expressed concern about a client’s increasing frailty, immobility and loneliness. The staff member hit upon an idea and visited the local library with the client. At the library, they Googled Europe and together were able to access images of the client’s home village, then the street view – an emotional and joyful journey for the client that was much appreciated by her family.
The commitment and dedication of our staff is something Interchange Australia is very proud of. If you are a support worker looking to explore new career opportunities or if you are looking for a career change in support work, Interchange Australia is always looking for potential employees who have a positive attitude, are honest, reliable, have a good work ethic and are keen to develop their skills in a services industry.
