Changing Home Care Providers
From 27 February 2017 all home care packages have been provided to individual older Australians pending an assessment to determine eligibility rather than the previous method where packages were awarded to approved providers via a tender process.
This change now gives recipients the ability to choose a provider that can provide services according to individual needs. It also means recipients can also change their providers if they are looking for a better fit for their needs or they move to another location. Once a new provider has been chosen the remaining funds (less the exit fee) will be transferred to the new provider.
When package recipients choose to transfer to a new provider they must notify their existing provider they no longer wish to receive care and agree on a date services will cease. The newly selected provider will then receive a notification in the My Aged Care provider portal alerting them to the transfer. The new provider then accepts the referral in the portal thus confirming the transfer.
The existing provider however will still need to provide care up until the mutually agreed cessation date. They will also need to notify the Department of Health and Ageing with 31 days of a client ceasing care with them and submit the recipient name and cessation date. Existing service providers must also advise recipients wishing to transfer their packages of the amount of unspent funds and arrange transfer of those funds to the new provider once one has been chosen.
If a recipient has agreed on a cessation date with their existing provider but has not yet chosen a new provider they then have 56 calendar days to enter into an agreement with a new provider. If the home care package recipient does not chose a new provider within the prescribed time their package will be withdrawn.
In summary home care package recipients wishing to change providers need to:
- Notify their existing provider they want to cease care
- Agree on the date services are to cease
- Identify and source a new provider
- Reactivate their home care services referral code by calling My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or online through the my Aged Care Client portal within 56 days of cessation date
- Notify the existing provider of the details of the new provider so unspent funds can be transferred
- Provided consent for information to be transferred from existing provider to the new provider
