Changes to Aged Care Services and the Importance of Preventing Social Isolation – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Wendy Hughes
A recent article in the Southern Highland News noted there are more than “25 per cent of people in the Southern Highlands over 65, almost twice the national average”, and preventing social isolation is paramount to relieving the pressure on local health systems. The article mentions that research revealed socially isolated people are 64 per cent more likely to develop dementia, are double the falls risk and those over 70 years old, make up close to 40 percent of avoidable hospital admissions.
Aged care providers are an integral part of the Department of Health’s upcoming changes to home care services, and from 27 February 2017, providers will be able to offer services across different service areas and package levels. This will replace the present system where places are allocated to providers according to planning regions.
What does this mean for you? If you are eligible for services under My Aged Care, it will give you a greater choice of provider and if you move, your funding will go with you.
Interchange Australia is an approved aged care provider and will continue to provide social support services and respite.
While many know social support covers the need for community access to shop and run errands, another aspect of social support is home visits, support to attend groups (the local Men’s Shed for example) or just be a part of an small activity. Research has shown time and time again, that artistic and imaginative activities reduce the need for psychotropic medications. Engaging in activities with another person, or in a small group, also increases social interactions, builds positive energy, and adds a sense of discovery to the day and confidence.
