Autism: Aidan’s story
28% of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants have autism, making it the second largest disability group in the NDIS. Work is being undertaken to develop National Guidelines for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis that will align with requirements for the NDIS and will provide a pathway for children and adults with a diagnosis of ASD to access therapy and services.
Interchange Australia understands that each person diagnosed with ASD has different challenges, strengths and abilities. Our aim is to provide support services so that people can reach their full potential.
Aidan, a client of Interchange Australia, is a personable young man who enjoys cooking, technology, music, bushwalking, bowling and golf. He became a client to access the services provided via ASDESI (Autism Spectrum Disorder Education Support and Information) and to participate in the wide range of exciting activities Interchange Australia offers such as art.
Aidan transitioned into the NDIS this year and was approved to receive supports including speech therapy and assistance to attend group based social and recreational activities. Since Aidan’s NDIS services commenced, he has enjoyed attending a wide range of exciting social and recreational activities with Interchange Australia including a Jervis Bay cruise, Rosehill Races, Footgolf at Penrose, Wings over Illawarra at Albion Park and Madame Tussauds in Sydney. Aidan has been warmly welcomed by other clients and has made many friends. One of the regular topics of conversation Aidan raises during speech therapy is about the enjoyment he gets from taking part in all of these activities and outings.
Aidan’s story demonstrates how positive outcomes can be achieved for clients as a result of the support services Interchange Australia provides.
